Chap. 56.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 2071 of the Code of Virginia,
relative to the collection of ferriage and tolls on ferries and toll bridges.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That sec-
tion twenty hundred and seventy-one of the Code of Virginia, be
amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 2071. The proprietor of any ferry or bridge may re-
quire the lawful ferriage or toll to be paid previous to a passage over
his ferry or bridge; and if any person attempt forcibly to pass by or
over any ferry or bridge, without paying the ferriage or toll, or
refuse to pay the same after having passed, he shall be liable to the
proprietor for the ferriage or toll which he has so refused or failed to
pay ; and, moreover, for every such offense, he shall be fined not less
than five dollars, nor more than twenty-five dollars.
And it shall be unlawful for any person to wilfully go upon, or to
drive any vehicle upon, any toll bridge, and to turn around upon such
bridge and go off with intent to evade payment of toll. For each such
offense such person, in addition to being liable for toll as if he had
crossed such bridge, shall pay a fine of not less than five dollars nor
more than twenty-five dollars.
If theré be demanded, wilfully and knowingly, at any such ferry or
bridge more than is lawful, the proprietor thereof shall forfeit to the
party aggrieved so much as is illegally demanded, and a further sum
of not less than two or more than fifteen dollars.
