Chap. 389.—An ACT to authorize any incorporated town in this State to provide
for the election or appointment of a justice of the peace for such town, and
to prescribe his powers and duties. | , [H B 334]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That any
incorporated town of this Commonwealth may provide in its charter
for the election or appointment of a justice of the peace for said town,
who shall be clothed with all the powers and authority in both civil and
criminal matters within such town as is now conferred upon the mayors
of towns by the general law of this Commonwealth; and that in towns,
whose charters shall contain such a provision for the election of a
justice of the peace, the mayor thereof shall by virtue of his office
possess no power, authority, or jurisdiction, to try violations of the
ordinances of the said town, or to act as a justice of the peace in either
civil or criminal matters. |
Any and all provisions now contained in the charter of any town
in this Commonwealth that may provide for the election or appointment
of a justice of the peace for said town is hereby ratified and confirmed
as fully and to the same extent as if said provision had been enacted
subsequent to the passage of this law.
