Chap. 381.—An ACT to make it lawful to take, catch or have in possession
“sponge” crabs at certain times, and empowering the commissioner of fisheries
to close the season upon certain conditions. [H B 371]

I. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That it shall
be lawful for any person holding a proper license, to take or catch
“sponge” crabs from any of the waters of this State, at any time from
April first to June thirtieth, both inclusive, in any year, notwithstand-
ing any provision of any existing law to the contrary.
Provided, however, that the commissioner of fisheries may, when
he deems it in the interest of conservation of said sponge crabs, close
the season after giving fifteen days’ notice of his intention so to do,
such notice, in writing, to be posted at the office of said commissioner
and a copy thereof mailed to each inspector.
Provided, further, that it shall be unlawful to take or catch any
crab, male or female, in the tidal waters of Virginia, by or with a trot
line, patent trot line, or similar device, from the first day of Decem-
ber to the fifteenth day of April of each year.
An emergency existing, this act shall be in force and effect upon its
passage.
