Chap. 19.—-An ACT to provide for the election of a police justice for the town
of Amherst. and to prescribe the jurisdiction of such police justice. [H B 7]

I. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That in July,
nineteen hundred and thirty, and every four years thereafter, there
shall be elected by the town council of the town of Amherst, in the
county of Amherst, a police justice for said town. Such police jus-
tice, when so elected, shall hold office for a term of four years, be-
ginning on the first day of August following his election and until
his successor is elected and qualified, subject to removal for good
cause by the council of the town. When elected, such police justice
shall qualify as now prescribed by law for the qualification of Justice
of the peace.
Z. The said police justice shall be a conservator of the peace
within the corporate limits of the said town and shall have exclusive
original jurisdiction for the trial of all offenses against the ordinances
of the said town. Appeals shall be allowed from the judgment of said
police justice to the circuit court of the county in the manner now
provided, or hereafter may be provided by law from the judgment of
justices of the peace.
3. If and whenever a trial justice shall have been elected or
appointed for the county of Amherst said trial justice shall, subject to
such limitations as are now or may hereafter be prescribed by law,
have exclusive original jurisdiction for the trial of all offenses com.
mitted within the corporate limits of said town, except offenses against
the ordinances thereof which shall be triable by the said police justice
for the town.
