Chap. 160.—An ACT to amend and re-enact sections 2 and 3 of chapter 13 of
acts of 1924, entitled an act to authorize counties to establish county free
libraries and reading rooms, and to provide for their operation and main-
tenance, approved February 13, 1924, so as to provide for the appointment
of boards of seven in counties adjacent to counties having a density of popu-
lation in excess of five hundred inhabitants per square mile. [H B 252]

I. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That sections
two and three of an act entitled an act to authorize counties to establish
county free libraries and reading rooms, and to provide for their
operation and maintenance, approved February thirteenth, nineteen
hundred and twenty-four, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as
follows:
Section 2. When any county shall have decided to establish and
maintain such county free lbrary or reading rooms, a board of five
directors shall be appointed by the judge of the circuit court of such
county, chosen from the citizens at large with reference to their fitness
for such office, one of whom shall be the superintendent of the public
schools of said county, provided that in counties adjacent to counties
having a density of population in excess of five hundred inhabitants per
square mile, the said board of directors shall be seven in number.
Section 3. Said directors shall be appointed for one, two, three and
four years, and annually thereafter the judge shall appoint one director
to take the place of the retiring director, who shall hold office for four
years, provided that in counties having a board greater than five in
number, the supplementary members shall be appointed for four years
each. The judge may remove any director, for misconduct or neglect
of duty. Vacancies on the board shall be filled in like manner, and
no director shall receive compensation as such.
