Chap. 105.—An ACT to authorize the board of supervisors of Appomattox
county to donate and convey to the United States government the old court-
house lot containing one acre, more or less, or so much thereof as may
be necessary, for the purpose of providing a suitable place for the erection
of a suitable monument commemorating the termination of the War between
the States. [S B 291]

Whereas, a bill is now pending before the congress of the United
States, authorizing an appropriation of one hundred thousand dollars,
or so much thereof as may be necessary, for the erection of a monument
at Appomattox, for the purpose of commemorating the termination of
the War between the States; and
Whereas, the most fitting place for the erection of said monument
is the old courthouse lot at Appomattox, containing one acre, more
or less; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
board of supervisors of Appomattox county be and are hereby author-
ized to donate and convey to the United States government by deed,
with special warranty of title, the old courthouse lot at Appomattox,
Virginia, containing one acre, more or less, or so much thereof as may
be necessary, and being the same lot on which the old courthouse
that was burned on February first, eighteen hundred and ninety-two
stood; provided, however, that the United States, acting through its
proper officer, first approves said lot as a satisfactory site for the
erection of said monument and indicates in writing its willingness to
accept a deed to said lot or so much thereof as may be necessary for
the purpose of erecting thereon said monument. The deed convey-
ing the property to the United States government shall be signed by the
chairman of the board of supervisors to which shall be attached the
seal of the county, attested by the county clerk.
