Chap. 9.—An ACT to authorize and empower the board of supervisors of the
county of Elizabeth City to borrow the sum of ten thousand ($10,000.00)
dollars, and to issue the bonds of said county therefor, the purpose of re-
funding an issue of bonds in the sum of ten thousand ($10,000.00) dollars,
issued by the board of supervisors of Elizabeth City county on the fif-
teenth day of June, eighteen hundred and ninety -eight, pursuant to resolu-
tion of said board of supervisors adopted on the fifteenth day of June,
eighteen hundred and ninety-eight, for the purpose of rebuilding the county
jail and making necessary repairs to the county clerk’s office of the county of
Elizabeth City, and to authorize and require the said board of supervisors to
levy a tax upon all property subject to local taxation in said county, sufficient
to pay the interest on said bonds and to create a sinking fund to retire the
principal thereof at maturity. [S B 18]

Whereas, the board of supervisors of Elizabeth City county,
pursuant to chapter three hundred, acts eighteen hundred and
ninety-three and eighteen hundred and ninety-four, did on the fif-
teenth day of June, eighteen hundred and ninety-eight, issue ten
thousand ($10,000.00) dollars of Elizabeth City county bonds for
the purpose of rebuilding the county jail and repairing the county
clerk’s office of said county. Which said bonds were dated June
fifteenth, eighteen hundred and ninety-eight, and payable thirty
years from their date, and
Whereas, pursuant to the terms in said bonds set forth the
entire issue of ten thousand ($10,000.00) dollars will become due
on June fifteenth, nineteen hundred and twenty-eight, and in as
much as no sinking fund has been provided to retire said bonds it
becomes necessary for the board of supervisors to refund the entire
issue on the fifteenth day of June, nineteen hundred and twenty-
eight; therefore
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the board of supervisors of Elizabeth City county be, and it is
hereby authorized and empowered to borrow the sum of ten thou-
sand ($10,000.00) dollars, on the faith and credit of the county of
Elizabeth City and to issue the bonds of said county therefor for
the purpose of refunding and paying ten thousand ($10,000.00)
dollars of county jail bonds issued by the board of supervisors of
Elizabeth City county pursuant to chapter three hundred, acts
eighteen hundred and ninety-three, and eighteen hundred and
ninety-four, which entire issue of said bonds become due and pay
able on June fifteenth, nineteen hundred and twenty-eight.
And the said board of supervisors of said county of Elizabeth
City is hereby further empowered and required to levy a tax upon
all of the property in said county subject to local taxation in
said county for the purpose of paying the interest on said bonds and
to create a sinking fund to retire the principal thereof at maturity.
2. The said bonds shall be dated June fifteenth, nineteen hun-
dred and twenty-eight, and be either coupon or registered and may
be issued in such denominations and payable at such time or times
not exceeding thirty years from the date thereof as the board of
supervisors may determine. They shall bear interest at a rate not
exceeding six per centum per annum and shall not be scold for less
than their par value.
3. An emergency existing this act shall be enforced from its
passage.
