Chap. 435.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 3405 of the Code of Vir-
ginia, relating to reports by clerks of courts of the business of such courts,
and to repeal so much of section 306 of the Code as requires abstracts of re-
ports made by clerks of courts to the clerk of the house of delegates to be
made by him to the general assembly. [H B 129]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That sec-
tion thirty-four hundred and tive of the Code of Virginia, be amend-
ed and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 3405. The clerks of the supreme court of appeals and the
clerk of each court of record, in this State, shall, within fifteen days
from the end of each term ot his court, make, to the comptroller,
a report of the business disposed of by his court for the term just
ended. The report herein provided for shall contain, among other
things, the number of days, and the hours of each day employed in
the dispatch of the business of the court, and such other information
as the comptroller may deem proper, to enable him to gain a fair
knowledge ot the business of the several courts of the State.
The comptroller shall furnish the clerks of the courts herein
mentioned with a form upon which the reports provided for shall be
made.
Such reports shall be so filed and arranged in the office of the
comptroller that the general assembly, or any other body or of-
ficer of this State may have access thereto.
The comptroller shall have the power, and it shall be his duty,
to obtain such information, and present the same to the next reg-
ular session of the general assembly, and at each recurring ses-
sion, together with any recommendation he may see fit to make,
looking to the equalization of the work of the several circuit and
other courts of this State, or any matter pertaining to the conduct
of the work of the courts which may enable the general assembly
to have complete knowledge thereof; and the comptroller, if he
find it necessary, may employ some person conversant with court
work, to obtain and compile the information referred to herein, and
pay a reasonable sum for such service out of any funds not other-
wise appropriated in the public treasury, which may be approved by
the poxernor.
So much of section 306 of the Code as requires abstracts of
reppris made by clerks of courts to the clerk of the house cf dele-
rates to be made by him to the general assembly, is hereby repealed.
