Chap. 28.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 1074 of the Code of Virginia,
relating to the commitment of inebriates, opium eaters, and persons addicted
to other drug habits, by a justice of the peace; the appointments of commit-
tees for such persons and the bonds to be given by such committees. [H B 22]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
section ten hundred and seventy-four of the Code of Virginia be
amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 1074. The justices committing an inebriate, opium eater
or person addicted to other drug habits to a private sanitarium
shall, at the time of such commitment, certify to the circuit court
of the county or the corporation or circuit court of the city, as the
case may be, the fact of such committal; and the circuit court of
the county, or corporation or circuit court of the city, or the judge
thereof in vacation, shall have power to appoint a committee to take
charge of the estate, real and personal, of said inebriate, opium eater
or person addicted to other drug habits; said committee shall exe-
cute a bond with such security as the court may require, condi-
tioned for the faithful discharge of his duties; and he shall report-
to the said court the time and circumstances of the release of such
inebriate from the private hospital or sanitarium to which he may
have been sent; and upon such report, if satisfactory, and upon a
settlement of his accounts, the said committee may be released from
further responsibility.
And all appointments made by the circuit courts of the cities
between January thirteenth, nineteen hundred and twenty, and
the date this act becomes effective, both inclusive, are hereby de-
clared to be valid and of full force and effect.
2. An emergency existing therefor, this act shall be in force
from the date of its passage.
