Chap. 188.—An ACT to authorize and empower the State board of health to
convey to the county school board of Roanoke county, a lot of land in Ca-
tawba valley, in the county of Roanoke, owned by the Commonwealth of
Virginia, and to make use of the money received therefor; and, to authorize
and empower the county school board of Roanoke county to sell a school build-
ing to the State board of health, and to make use of the money received there-

Whereas the Commonwealth of Virginia is the owner of a large
tract of land, in Catawba valley, in the county of Roanoke, in the
State of Virginia, upon a part of which is erected the Catawba
sanatorium; and,
Whereas there is also, erected upon the said tract of land a small
school building, owned by the county school board of Roanoke
county; and, ,
Whereas the school building aforesaid is inadequate to meet the
needs of the community; and, the county school board of Roanoke
county is desirous of erecting a brick building, in Catawba valley,
adequate to meet the needs of the community; and,
Whereas a large number of children who will attend such
school, are the children of the employees of the said sanatorium;
and,
Whereas the county school board of Roanoke county desires to
purchase a lot of land, a part of the tract aforesaid, belonging to the
Commonwealth of Virginia, upon which to erect such a school
building, as herein mentioned; and,
Whereas the State board of health has need for the school
building herein mentioned, now upon the said tract of land owned
by the county school board of Roanoke county; and,
Whereas one hundred and fifty dollars per acre is a fair value
for the lot of land desired by the said county school board, which
contains approximately three and one-half or four acres; and two
hundred dollars is a fair value for the school building, now stand-
ing upon the tract of land owned, as aforesaid, by the Common-
wealth of Virginia; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the State board of health be, and it is hereby, authorized and em-
powered to convey, by a proper deed, to the county school board of
Roanoke county, not to exceed four acres, of the “valley property”
adjoining the land of J. L. Wells and others, for a price, at the rate
of one hundred and fifty dollars per acre, two hundred dollars of
which may be used to purchase the school building, in the preamble
above mentioned, and the balance to be used by the State board
of health in the improvement of the property, or any part thereof,
owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the said Catawha
valley:
2. Be it further enacted that the school board of Roanoke county
be, and it is hereby, authorized and empowered to sell to the State
hoard of health, the school building now owned by it, in the pream-
ble above mentioned, for the sum of two hundred dollars, to be used
hv the said school board in the erection of a new school building
upon the lot of land to be conveyed to it, as aforesaid.
3. An emergency existing, this act shall be in force and effect
from and after the date of its passage.
