Chap. 493.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 1 of an act approved March
20, 1920, entitled an act in relation to local school taxes; and repealing sec-
tions 740 and 2721 of the Code of Virginia, as heretofore amended. [S B 283]
Approved March 25, 1926.
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That section
one of an act approved March twentieth, nineteen hundred and twenty,
entitled an act in relation to local school taxes; and repealing sections
seven hundred and forty and twenty-seven hundred and twenty-one
of the Code of Virginia, as heretofore amended, be amended and re-
enacted so as to read as follows: )
Section 1. Each county, city, town, if the same be a separate
school district, and school district, is authorized and required to raise
sums by a tax on property of not less than fifty cents nor more than
one dollar in the aggregate on the one hundred dollars of the assessed
value of property in any one year, to be apportioned and expended by
the local school authorities of said counties, cities, towns and districts
in establishing and maintaining such schools as in their judgment the
public welfare may require; provided, however, that in the county of
Wise such tax shall not be less than fifty cents nor more than one
dollar and seventy-five cents in the aggregate on the one hundred
doHars of the assessed value of the property and that in the county of
Warwick such tax shall not be less than fifty cents nor more than two
dollars and twenty-five cents in the aggregate on the one hundred
dollars of assessed value of the property.
2. An emergency existing, this act shall be in force from its
passage.
