Chap. 443.—An ACT requiring each local road board in the county of Surry
to publish annually a detailed statement showing ,the receipts and expend-
itures of public money for highway construction and maintenance in 1ts
respective magisterial districts, and providing a penalty for failure.

1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That in the
nonth of December of each year the chairman of each local road board
n the county of Surry shall publish a detailed statement of all receipts
ind expenditures of public funds used in and about the construction
ind maintenance of highways and bridges in the magisterial districts
or which said board was appointed, except highways and bridges,
‘onstructed or maintained by the State.
2. Such statement shall show the sources from which the funds
vere derived and the total amount thereof, and it shall give in detail
the character of work done, and supplies purchased, for which the
‘xpenditures were made. It shall designate as nearly as may be, the
oads, and locations thereon, on account of which the expenditures
were made, shall state the names of the persons employed, their re-
spective rates of wage, the total of the money so paid to each, and shall
show the total cost of each project.
3. It shall state the amount of material purchased for purpose of
‘onstruction and maintenance, together with the name of the person,
irm, or corporation from whom purchased and the price thereof, and
t shall state the amount and cost of unused material on hand at the
‘ime of publication of the statement. °
4. The statement herein provided for shall be published in one
‘egular issue of some newspaper published in the magisterial district
or which such statement is made, or if there be no such newspaper,
‘hen in some other newspaper published in the county; or if there be
10 newspaper published in the county; then publication shall be made
n some newspaper having general circulation therein. The cost of
dublishing said statements shall be paid out of the district funds of
-he respective districts and a copy thereof shall be filed with the clerk
of the board of supervisors of the said county.
5. Any chairman of such road board failing to publish such state-
ment as is herein provided for shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and,
ipon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not less than
ifty dollars nor more than one hundred dollars.
