Chap. 291.—An ACT to authorize the State highway commission to continue to
make allocations from State roads construction funds to roads in the State
highway system within the boundaries of the Shenandoah National Park.
and if such roads be constructed by the United States, or any department.
board or commission thereof and to pay the sums so allocated to the com-
mission on conservation and development of Virginia on account of the
purchase price of the area included within the said Shenandoah National

Whereas, it is proposed that the Shenandoah National Park be
established within the territorial limits of the Commonwealth of Vir-
ginia by the government of the United States, and that property he
acquired by or for the United States for that purpose; and
Whereas, certain sections of roads included within the State high-
way system are located within the proposed boundaries of the said
Shenandoah National Park, and if the said Shenandoah National
Park be established, and property is acquired therefor, certain sections
of roads in the State highway system will be included within the
boundaries thereof; now therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
State highway commission is hereby authorized in its discretion, if the
said Shenandoah National Park be established by the United States
of America, and the property therefor be acquired by or for the United
States, or any department, board, or commission thereof, to continue
to make allocations as provided by law for the construction of roads
in the State highway system, to the sections of unimproved roads in
said system located within the boundaries of the Shenandoah National
Park, and further in its discretion to pav to the commission on con-
servation and development of Virginia, the sums so allocated for the
construction of such unimproved sections of the State highways with-
in the boundaries of the said Shenandoah National Park when estab-
lished, however when such allocations are made they shall not exceec|
the estimated cost for the completion of such unimproved sections in
the State highway system within the said park boundaries, and fur-
ther that the State highway commission be satisfied that within a
reasonable time such sections of unimproved State highways will be
improved by and at the expense of the United States government or
some agency thereof and no tolls or other charges be made for the
public use of the highways included in the State highway system
embraced in the park area. The commission on conservation and
development of Virginia is hereby authorized to use the sums so re-
ceived from the State highway commission, if and when received, in
payment on account of the purchase by or for the United States of
America of the area included within the said Shenandoah National
Park, or in payment of obligations incurred therefor.
