Chap. 319.—An ACT to authorize the council of the town of Lawrenceville, in the
county of Brunswick, to levy, upon certain conditions, for local school pur-
poses, an additional tax not exceeding sixty cents upon the one hundred dol-
rs assessed value of all property within said town subject to local school
taxation. {H B 412)

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That in addi-
tion to the maximum levies now authorized by general law, the council
of the town of Lawrenceville, in the county of Brunswick, is hereby
authorized and empowered to levy, for public school purposes, in the
said town, a tax of not exceeding sixty cents in any one year on every
one hundred dollars of the assessed value of all property in said town
subject to local school taxation; provided, however, that this additional
tax shall not be levied unless, and until, the supreme court of appeals
of Virginia shall decide that the board of supervisors of Brunswick
county has no authority under the general law to levy a tax upon the
property subject to local school taxation within the town of Lawrence-
ville; and, provided, further, that this additional tax shall not be levied
unless and until at a special election to be held in said town on such
date as may be fixed by the council thereof a majority of the qualified
voters living within the corporate limits of the said town and voting in
the said election shall vote in favor of such additional tax. And it is
hereby made the duty of the regular election officers to prepare the
ballots and otherwise provide for the submission of the said question to
the voters at the said election. On each ballot shall be printed in sepa-
rate lines the following: :
For Additional School Tax.
Against Additional School Tax.
Voters desiring to vote in favor of the additional school tax shall strike
out the words ‘‘Against additional school tax,”’ and voters desiring to
vote against the additional school tax shall strike out the words ‘For
additional school tax.’”’ Voters striking out or erasing the words ‘‘For’”
or ‘“‘Against”’ shall be deemed to have stricken out or erased the entire
line. But itis moreover expressly provided that the council may, if it so
desires, provide for the submission of the said question to the voters
aforesaid at any regular election instead of having a special election as
aforesaid.
2. Anemergency existing, this act shall be in force from its passage.
