Chap. 246.—An ACT to amend an act entitled an act to provide a new charter for
the city of Portsmouth, approved March 10, 1908, by adding thereto a new
section to be numbered section 79-a, which new section is on the subject of the
high constable and deputy high constables. {H B 411)

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That an act
entitled an act to provide a new charter for the city of Portsmouth,
approved March tenth, nineteen hundred and eight, be amended by
adding thereto a new section, to be numbered section 79-a, which new
section shall read as follows: &: kay
Section 79-a. The high constable of the city of Portsmouth may
appoint one or more deputies who may discharge any of the official
duties of their princ)pal during his continuance in office, unless it be
some duty the performance of which by a deputy is expressly forbidden
by law. Any such deputy, before entering upon the duties of his office,
shall take and subscribe the oath now provided for city officers, which
oath shall be filed with the clerk of the hustings court of the city of
Portsmouth. Any deputy high constable so appointed may be removed
from office either by his principal or by the council of the city of Ports-
mouth. The compensation of any deputy appointed under this section
shall be provided for by his principal.
2. Anemergency existing, this act shall be in force from its passage.
