Chap. 181.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 6 of an act entitled an act to
amend and re-enact the charter of the town of Culpeper, approved January 11,
1898, as heretofore amended. {H B 207}
‘Approved March 14, 1924.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That section
six of an act entitled an act to amend and re-enact the charter of the
town of Culpeper, approved January eleventh, eighteen hundred and
ninety-eight, as heretofore amended, be amended and re-enacted to
read as follows:
Section 6. On the first day of July, nineteen hundred and twenty-
four, and on the same date each year thereafter, the council shall elect
a town sergeant, who may at any time be removed from office by a
majority vote of the council. Upon the death, removal or resignation
of the town sergeant the council shall elect his successor, who shall hold
office until the first day of July following. The sergeant shall be the
chief police officer of the said town, and shall be under the orders and
direct supervision of the mayor. He shall perform such duties as may
be required of him by the mayor or the council, and he shall be liable
both to the mayor and the council for any and every failure in the dis-
charge of his duties. He shall have power to exercise within the cor-
porate limits of the town and within one mile of the limits thereof all
the duties of a constable, and shall receive the same pay therefor, and
he and his sureties shall be liable to all fines, penalties and forfeitures for
any failure, refusal or dereliction in the discharge of the duties of his
office. He shall receive for his services such compensation as the council
may fix, not to exceed one hundred dollars per month.
2. Anemergency existing, this act shall be in force from its passage.
