CHAP. 29.—An ACT to amend and re-enact an act approved March 20,
1920, entitled an act in relation to local school taxes; and repealing
sections 740 and 2721 of the Code of Virginia, as relates to the county of
Wise. [H B 27]
Approved March 20, 1923.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
section one of an act approved March twentieth, nineteen
hundred and twenty, entitled an act in relation to local school
taxes; and repealing sections seven hundred and forty and
twenty-seven hundred and twenty-one of the Code of Virginia,
be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 1. Each county, city, town, if the same be a separate
school district, and school district, is authorized and required to
raise sums by a tax on property of not less than fifty cents nor
more than one dollar in the aggregate on the hundred dollars
of the assessed value of property in any one year, to be appor-
tioned and expended by the local school authorities of said
counties, cities, towns and districts in establishing and main-
taining such schools as in their judgment the public welfare
may require; providing, however, that in the county of Wise
such tax shall not be less than fifty cents mor more than one dollar
and thirty cents in the aggregate on the hundred dollars of the
assessed value of the property.
2. An emergency existing by reason of the necessity for
laying levies for local school taxes for the current year, before
this act would become effective in regular course, this act shall
be in force from its passage.
