1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That sec-
four thousand five hundred and eighty of the Code of Virginia be
amended and re-enacted to read as follows:
Sec. 4580. Appointment of police for religious meetings.—The
supervisor or any justice of the peace of the magisterial district
wherein a camp meeting or any other religious meeting is held may.
in his discretion, upon the written application of the conductor of
any meeting, in writing appoint as many persons as temporary police
as he may deem necessary to preserve order at such meeting, who
shall have, within three miles of such meeting, the powers of con-
servators of the peace, and shall receive the same fees as are allowed
sheriffs of counties for making arrests and carrying prisoners to jail,
and when appointed by a supervisor: shall receive two dollars per day
to be paid out of the county treasury.
