Chap. 504.—An ACT to appropriate $10,000.00 to the Matthew Fontaine Maury
Association for the purpose of aiding in the erection of a monument, tc
request the governor to designate Matthew Fontaine Maury monument day
and to provide for calling on the people of Virginia for ime ae

Whereas, forty-seven years have elapsed since the death of Mat
thew Fontaine Maury, a Virginian, who brought renown to his nattv
State through his invaluable scientific achievements ; and, _ ;
Whereas, it is fitting that some material evidence be given of th
esteem and pride in which his memory is held; and,
Whereas. the Matthew Fontaine Maury Association desires to ere
a monument to his memory ; therefore, oe
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virgimia, That th
sum of ten thousand dollars be, and the same is hereby, appropriate:
out of any moneys in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, to th
Matthew Fontaine Maury Association, the said sum to be used fo
the purpose of erecting a monument or appropriate memorial to th
said Matthew Fontaine Maury, and to be paid by the treasurer ¢
Virginia on the warrant of the auditor of public accounts issued upo
the certificate of the president of said association, countersigned by
its treasurer; but said appropriation shall be divided into installments
of five thousand dollars each, one of which shall be payable out of the
revenues of the present fiscal year, and the other out of the revenues of
the following year. ;
2. The governor of Virginia is hereby requested to issue his
proclamation designating May eleventh, nineteen hundred and twenty,
as Matthew Fontaine Maury Monument Day and to call upon the
people of Virginia for contributions to aid in erecting said monument.
3. The State board of education is hereby directed through the
superintendent of public instruction to order the various division super-
intendents of schools to instruct the pupils of the public schools of
the State, through their teachers, on the day designated by the gov-
ernor as Matthew Fortaine Maury Monument Day, concerning the
life and achievements of this famous Virginian and to urge them to
contribute to this cause.
