Chap. 290.—An ACT requiring certain State institutions to purchase only pure
bred cattle, sheep and hogs. [H B 182)
Approved March 19, 1920.
Whereas, the institutions operated and controlled by the State
which own cattle, sheep and hogs, should be able to supply registered
animals to farmers within the State; and
Whereas, the raising of pure- -bred live stock by these State-owned
institutions will not only set a standard for the farmers and stockmen
of Virginia, but will demonstrate the advisability of keeping regis-
tered live stock on the farms of Virginia; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That all
institutions operated or controlled by the State where cattle, sheep or
hogs are raised, shall, within the period of four years fram the date
of the passage of this act, keep no cattle, sheep or hogs that are not
pure bred—with the exception of cattle, sheep, or hogs that are bought
for fattening purposes or for immediate slaughter or for dairy pur-
poses where impractical to get pure breeds. All such institutions shall
keep their cattle, sheep and hogs, which are maintained for breeding
purposes, registered, and shall report monthly to the commissioner
of agriculture what stock, if any, they have for sale; and the said
commissioner shall cause to be published in the bulletins issued by
his department the substance of all such reports. ,
The said institutions shall offer the farmers of Virginia first pre-
ference in any sale of surplus stock. The institutions now having
registered stock shall assist in every way possible the other institu-
tions of the State in building their foundation herds.
