Chap. 288.—An ACT to authorize the mayor and council of the city of Wil-
liamsburg to sell and make conveyance of certain lots of land owned by
the said city. H B 437]
Approved March 19, 1920. -
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
mayor and council of the city of Williamsburg be, and they are hereby
authorized and empowered, in their discretion, to make sale and con-
veyance, in the manner hereinafter provided, of all lots, tracts or
parcels of land owned by the said city.
Z. Any sale made pursuant to this act shall be made at public
auction in front of the courthouse door of said city, after advertising
the sale for four successive weeks in a newspaper published or of
general circulation in the said city, and upon such terms as may be
prescribed by the said council; provided, however, that as to any lot,
parcel or tract of land now held or occupied by any person by au-
thority of any lease from the said city, the said council, by a two-
thirds affirmative vote of all its members, may agree with such leasee
upon a reasonable valuation of such property, and in the event of such
agreement such lots or parcel of land may be conveyed to such leasee,
without the necessity of conformity to the provisions above provided ;
provided, further, that no sale shall be made of any such lot or
tract of land until a resolution has been passed by a recorded af-
firmative vote of two-thirds of all the members of the council au-
thorizing the same.
3. The proceeds of all such sales to ke applied to the retirement
of the bonded indebtedness of the city.
4. The mayor of said city is hereby authorized and empowered
to execute and deliver to the purchasers of said property, or any of
it, a good and sufficient deed, in the name of the city and under its
seal attested by the clerk of the council, whenever requested so to do,
and in conformity with the provisions hereof.
5. Provided further that nothing in this act shall apply to any
section or sections of the public squares known as the Courthouse
Green, and the Palace Green, which shall be preserved as such.
