Chap. 121.—An ACT to authorize and empower the judge of the circuit court
of the county of Prince Edward, to have conveyed to the Rice Local Union,
No. 63, of the Prince Edward County Branch of the Farmers’ Educational
and Co-Operative Union of America, or any other farmers’ organization,
certain land at Rice, in the county of Prince Edward. H B 183]

Whereas, on the eleventh day of May, eighteen hundred and
eighty-nine, a voluntary association of farmers was organized at
Rice, in the county of Prince Edward, under the name of Farmers’
Alliance, number three hundred and fourteen; and,
Whereas, on the twenty-fifth day of March, eighteen hundred
and ninety-six, J. Y. Phillips and wife conveyed to H. E. Watkins
and W. H. Hubbard, trustees of said Alliance, at Rice depot, in the
county of Prince Edward, a certain parcel of land, in which the
Alliance hall was situated, fronting forty-four feet on the road leading
from Rice to Burkeville, and running back between parallel lines
one hundred and two feet, containing about one-eighth of an acre,
to be held by the said: trustees, or their successors in office, for the
use and benefit of said Alliance, number three hundred and fourteen,
at Rice depot; and,
Whereas, since the time of said conveyance, both of said trustees
have departed this life, and no successors have been appointed by
the said Alliance; and,
Whereas, said Alliance has long since ceased to exist as such, and
many of the original members of said Alliance have died; and,
Whereas, since the discontinuance of said Alliance, various organi-
zations of farmers under one name and another with the same objects
as those contemplated by the Alliance have continued to use said
building and lot, for the same purpose for which it was originally
used, and intended to be used by said Alliance; and
Whereas, at the present time the Rice local union, number sixty-
three, of the Prince Edward county branch of the Farmers’ Educa-
tional co-operative union have organized with similar objects, and
among which are some of the members of the original Alliance,
and is carrying on the same work which was contemplated by said
Alliance ; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
circuit court of the county of Prince Edward be, and is, hereby au-
thorized and empowered to appoint a commissioner, or commissioners,
to convey the said lot with the buildings thereon at Rice to the Rice
local union, number sixty-three, of the Prince Edward county branch
of the Farmers’ Educational Co-operative Union, or any other farm-
ers’ organization, to be held by them for the same purposes, and for
the same objects for which it was originally purchased, and held by
the said Alliance.
