Chap. 251.—An ACT appropriating the sum of $6,500.00 or so much thereof
as may be necessary for rebuilding causeway and bridge at Jamestown
Island. ([S B 224]
Approved March 15, 1918.
Whereas, the association for the preservation of Virginia antiqui-
ties is the owner of Jamestown Island; and
Whereas, the first legislative body which ever assembled in
America was that which met at Jamestown in 1619; and
Whereas, it is proposed to celebrate the three hundredth anni-
versary of this great event; and
Whereas, the general assembly of Virginia, in nincteen hundred
and sixteen, appointed a committee to arrange a plan for the said
celebration; and
Whereas, it is impossible to reach the island from the mainland
without rebuilding the causeway over Pitch and Tar swamp, and
the bridge which connects the mainland with the island; and
Whereas, the said association, from causes mainly due to the
present war, has no resources with which to make said improve-
ments;
_ Now, therefore, be it resolved by the general assembly of Vir-
ginia:
_1. That the sum of twenty-five hundred dollars for rebuilding
said causeway, and the sum of four thousand dollars, or so much
thereof as may be necessary for rebuilding said bridge, connecting
the mainland with Jamestown Island, be, and the same are hereby,
appropriated out of any monies in the treasury not otherwise appro-
priated.
2. That, upon presentation of orders signed by the president
of said association, the auditor of public accounts shall issue war-
rants upon the treasurer of the State for the payment of said sums
to the treasurer of the association’ for the preservation of Virginia
antiquities.
