Chap. 203.—An ACT to regulate the running at large of dogs in the county
of Clarke. [H B 309]
Approved March 14, 1918.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
board of supervisors of the county of Clarke may, by a resolution
adopted by a majority vote of the members of such board, petition
the circuit court of said county for the appointment of an official
to be known as the pound keeper of said county, whose compensa-
tion and bond shall be fixed by the court and paid out of the county
treasury, and whose duty it shall be to capture any unlicensed or
untagged dog in said county, detain said dog in a suitable pound
and notify the owner, if known, to pay the tax on said dog and the
cost of its detention and feeding, not exceeding ten cents a day for
the period of such detention. If the dog is not claimed by the owner
for a period of ten days, the dog may be sold within five days addi-
tional, for an amount sufficient to pay cost of license and tag, and
the cost of detention, and if not sold shall be put to death in a
humane manner; any amount more than this shall be turned over
to the supervisors. The license for a male dog shall be one dollar
and fifty cents and for a female dog shall be two dollars and fiftw
cents, which shall be payable, and license received and worn by dog
not later than February first of each year, from treasurer. Any dog
not, wearing latest license shall be treated as an unlicensed dog.
To every one paying such license he shall issue @ Tikva, eg a
the name of the owner plainly stamped thereon with the year in
which the license was granted, and such tags shall not have the
same shape for two consecutive years.
9. Nothing in this act shall apply to hounds on the eastern side
of the Shenandoah river, while they remain on the east side thereof,
but if found on the western side of said river without tags, they
shall be liable to impoundment.
