Chap. 344.—An ACT to amend and re-enact an act entitled an act to incorpo-
rate the town of La Crosse, Mecklenburg county, Virginia, approved
February 15, 1901, as amended and re-enacted by an act approved March
14, 1904. (S. B. 453.)

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
section sixteen of the charter of the town of La Crosse in Mecklen-
burg county, as enacted and approved February fifteenth, nineteen
hundred and one, and re-enacted and approved March fourteenth,
nineteen hundred and four, be amended and re-enacted so as to read
as follows:
Sec. 16. The council has authority to pass ordinances upon any
subject; it may prescribe any penalty, not exceeding one hundred
dollars fine, or one year in jail, and may provide that upon failure
to pay fine and costs, any offender may be imprisoned not exceed-
ing one year, or both; in case a prisoner convicted under any ordi-
nance of said town of La Crosse shall be committed to jail in
execution of sentence, or for failure to pay such fine and costs, he
is to be considered and treated as a county prisoner, the county to
pay costs of confinement; and the said prisoner may be sentenced
to work on county roads as other county prisoners; such sentence
however to be at the discretion of the town authorities whether they
shall commit the prisoner to confinement in the town jail and work
on the streets of the said town, or to the county jail and work on
the county roads of the county of Mecklenburg. Provided, however,
that the right is hereby reserved to any person convicted under
any ordinance of the said town to appeal to the circuit court of
Mecklenburg county in all cases wherein the fine exceeds the sum
of ten dollars.
