CHAP. 312.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 12 of the charter of
the city of Alexandria, Virginia, approved February 20, 1871, as
subsequently amended.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
section twelve of the charter of the city of Alexandria, Virginia,
approved February twentieth, eighteen hundred and seventy-one,
as amended by an act approved March twenty-second, eighteen
hundred and seventy-one, and by an act approved March seven-
teenth, eighteen hundred and seventy-six, and by an act approved
March twentieth, eighteen hundred and seventy-seven, and by an
act approved January twenty-fifth, eighteen hundred and seven-
ty-nine, and by an act approved March first, eighteen hundred
and eighty-eight, and by an act approved February twenty-fifth,
eighteen hundred and ninety-two, and by an act approved Feb-
ruary twenty-sixth, eighteen hundred and ninety-four, and by
an act approved March first, eighteen hundred and ninety-four,
and by an act approved March eighth, eighteen hundred: and
ninety-four, and by an act approved February twenty-seventh,
eighteen hundred and ninety-six, and by an act approved March
third, eighteen hundred and ninety-six, and by an act approved
March fourth, eighteen hundred and ninety-six, and by an act
approved February seventh, eighteen hundred and ninety-eignt,
be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§12. The common council and board of aldermen so
elected together, and those thereafter to be elected, and their
successors, shall be, and they are hereby, made a body politic
and corporate, by the name of the city council of Alexandria,
and under said name shall contract and be contracted with, bor-
row money and give its notes or issue its bonds therefor; to pur-
chase, take, possess and enjoy lands, tenements, goods and chat-
tels, either in fee or lessee estate therein, and the same to give,
grant, let, sell, assign or transfer; to plead and be impleaded,
prosecute and defend all causes, complaints and actions, real,
personal or mixed; to have a common seal and perpetual suc-
cession, and all the estate, rights and credits now or heretofore
vested in the common council of Alexandria shall be vested in
said city council when elected, and may be recovered in their
name of said city; and in like manner all claims and demands
against the common council of Alexandria, prior to the opera-
tion of the present act, may be prosecuted and recovered against
the aforesaid city council.
2. All ordinances or parts of ordinances or parts of the city
charter of Alexandria, Virginia, in conflict herewith are hereby
repealed. ,
