CHAP. 142.—An ACT to provide for the removal of the remains of General
Henry Lee from the State of Georgia, and re-inter the same at some
appropriate place in Virginia, and to appropriate funds for the pur-
pose.

Whereas, the mortal remains of General Henry Lee, known
and honored by his countrymen as “Light Horse Harry Lee,”
lie buried in the distant State of Georgia, on Cumberland
island, near Savannah; and
Whereas, there are few who have been, and are, more
honored for his distinguished services to his country than
General Henry Lee; and his name being revered and honored as
the father of his most illustrious son, General Robert E. Lee:

Whereas, it is the wish and desire of the people of Virginia
that his mortal remains should finally rest in his native State;
an
Whereas, by an act approved in the year eighteen hundred
and sixty-one (1861) the general assembly of Virginia, appropri-
ated the sum of five hundred dollars, for the purpose of having
his remains brought back to Virginia, the execution of which
purpose was prevented by the war; now, therefore, in order to
carry into effect the above purpose.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That a
committee of three be appointed, two from the house of dele-
gates, appointed by the speaker, and one from the senate, ap-
pointed by its president, who shall, as soon as practical, proceed
to have the remains of General Henry Lee disintered from their
resting place on Cumberland island, near Savannah, Georgia,
and removed and placed in the vault of the Lee family in Lee
chapel, at Washington and Lee university, in the town of Lex-
ington, Virginia, or at such other place as the Lee family may
desire, all to be done, however, by and with the consent of the
Lee family.
2. The said committee shall have authority to do all
things necessary to carry out the purpose of this act, and make
arrangements for such ceremonies as may be deemed proper to
be had at the re-interment of the remains, and the sum of five
hundred dollars ($500.00), or such part thereof as may be nec-
essary is hereby appropriated out of any funds in the treasury
not otherwise appropriated, to be used by the said committee in
the execution of the duties imposed upon them by this act, and
the auditor of public accounts shall issue his warrant upon the
treasurer for said sum or such parts thereof as may be ordered
by said committee. ;
