CHAP. 124.—An ACT to amend and re-enact sections 37 and 39 of the char-
ter of the city of Alexandria, Virginia, as amended by an act of the
general Assembly of Virginia approved February 20, 1871; by an act
approved March 22, 1871; by an act approved March 17, 1876; by an
act approved March 20, 1877; by an act approved January 25, 1879; by
an act approved March 1, 1888; by an act approved February 25, 1892;
and by acts approved February 26, 1894; March 1, 1894; March 8,
1894; February 27, 1896; March 3, 1896; March 4, 1896; and by an act
approved February 7, 1898.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
section thirty-seven and thirty-nine of the charter of the city of
Alexandria, Virginia, be amended and re-enacted to read as
follows:
Upon the organization of the board of police commissioners,
they shall select from the electors of the city of Alexandria a
chief of police, whose duty, pay, and bonds shall be such as may
be ordained by the city council. His warrant of appointment,
signed by a majority of the board, must be filed with the audi-
tor of the city of Alexandria. The board shall further elect
such number of sergeants and policemen as may be authorized
by the city council. After the police force has been so constitu-
ted, any vacancy therein shall be filled by the board in like man-
ner. Such chief, sergeants and policemen shall constitute the
police force of the city, and shall hold their respective positions
during good behavior, or until they may be severally removed
by said board for cause, after such investigation as the board
may deem necessary. The mayor of the city of Alexandria shall
have the power and authority to suspend the chief, sergeants or
any policeman for misconduct in office for a period not to ex-
ceed thirty days, or until such board shall convene and take ac-
tion in the matter. The said board shall perform any other
duties connected with the police department which the city coun-
cil may delegate to it, and each member of the board shall be
clothed with all the power of a conservator of the peace under
the laws of this State.
The uniform, rules and regulations of the said police force
shall be prescribed by said board, and the pay of said captain,
sergeants and policemen shall be fixed and prescribed by the
city council.
