Chap. 577.—An ACT to provide for the election of justices of the peace, and
their jurisdiction, in cities in which, by the terms of their charters, no pro-
vision is made for the election of justices of the peace.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That in every
city of this Commonwealth in which, by the terms of its charter, no pro-
vision is made for the election of justices of the peace, there shall be
elected by the qualified voters of each ward of any such city, one justice
of the peace, who shall hold office for the term of four years, and until
his successor is elected and qualified, unless sooner removed from office.
The said justices shall be conservators of the peace within the corporate
limits of the cities for which they are respectively elected, and within
one mile beyond the corporate limits thereof; and within such limits
shall possess the jurisdiction and exercise the powers conferred upon
justices of the peace under the laws of this Commonwealth, except that
nothing herein contained shall be construed as vesting in such Justices
any portion of the jurisdiction given by law to police justices of the
cities of this Commonwealth.
2. This act shall be in force on February first, nineteen hundred and
four.
