Chap. 156.—An ACT making it a misdemeanor to employ children under the age
of twelve years in manufacturing, mechanical and mining operations, and to
regulate the hours of employment of children between the ages of twelve and
fourteen, and to prescribe penalties for violations of the provisions of said act.
Approved April 16, 1903.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That no child under
he age of fourteen years and over twelve years of age shall be employed
n any manufacturing, mechanical, or mining operations in this Com-
nonwealth to work between the hours of six o’clock post-meridian and
even o’clock ante-meridian; and that no child under the age of twelve
ears shall be employed in any manufacturing, mechanical, or mining
peration in this Commonwealth; and any owner, agent, superintendent,
verseer, foreman, or manager of any manufacturing, mechanical, or min-
ng operation who shall knowingly employ, or permit to be employed, in
he operation of which he is owner, agent, superintendent, overseer, fore-
Lan, or manager any child contrary to the provisions of this act, and any
arent or guardian who allows or consents to such employment of his
Lild or ward, shall, upon conviction of such offense, he fined not less than
wenty-five dollars nor more than one hundred dollars.
2. This act shall be in force on and from January first, nineteen hun-
red and four.
