Chap. 205.— An ACT to establish Norton school district. in Wise county,
Approved May 8, 1903,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the fel-
lowing territory, which is now in Gladeville school district. in) Wise
county. be, and the same is hereby, constituted a school district. by the
name of the Norton school district—to-wit: Beginning at a chestnut
post. berg the nertheast corer of Spruce and Eleventh streets, and
corner to plat number one of the Norton Land and Improvement Com-
pany. which plat is recorded in the office of the clerk of the said court
of Wise county. in decd book twenty-six, pages one hundred and fifty-
one, et cetera: thence south sixty-six degrees, west four hundred and
seventy-two fect, to a point on the line dividing the Jands of the Nor-
on
ton Land and Improvement Company and Patrick Hagan; thence vw
their division line south one degree forty minutes, east two th
sand one hundred and ninety feet, to a white oak and poplar on
bank of Benjamin’s branch, south eighty-four degrees — fifty-
minutes, east two hundred and sixty-seven and seven-tenths fcet. er

2. The trustees of the said district shall be appointed in the man-
ncr provided by law for the appointment of district school trustees, and
shall, in addition to the duties imposed by law on district school trus-
tees, ascertain and report to the board of supervisors of Wise county
the rate of taxation desired to be levied for district school purposes in
said district on the real and personal estate therein: provided, said
rate of taxation shall not exceed five mills on the dollar in any one
year.
. The elerk of the board of trustees shall transmit to the board of
cue rvisors of Wise county a copy of the order ascertaining the rate
of taxation as aforesaid, which order shall be signed by the chairman
of the board, and also attested by its secretary. T he board of SUpervisors
for Wise county shall in its discretion lay a levy for district school pur-
poses for said district of the amount ascertained as aforesaid by the trus-
Tees.
The trustees may, if they deem it necessary, apply the money col-
lected under the provisions of this act to the payment. of salaries of teach-
ers in sald school district as well as to distriet: school purposes,
Nothing contained in this act shall reheve the Norton school districé
as hereby constituted from paving its pro rata share of the bonded indebt-
edness of Gladeville school district incurred for the purpose of building
the public school-house in the town of Norton.
This act shall be in force from its passage.
