Chap. 188.—An ACT appropriating the sum of $200,000 to the Jamestown Ex:
sition Company.

Whereas, the Jamestown Exposition Company has been duly organiz
under the authority of an act of the general assembly of Virginia, a
proved March tenth, nineteen hundred and two, which company is
paring to establish and conduct an exposition of great magnitude tt
will both commemorate the unequaled importance to this Commonwea!
and to the United States of America, of the first Anglo-Saxon settleme
in the western hemisphere, at Jamestown, and will also serve to advert
to the commercial and business interests of the world the vast natu
gifts and resources which exist to a great extent undeveloped within t]
Commonwealth; and,

Whereas, it is proper, advisable, and expedient that such an expo
tion, by reason of both its historic purposes and its natural advantag
should receive both the moral and financial support and endorsement
the State of Virginia; therefore,

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the su
of two hundred thousand dollars be, and the same is hereby, appropriat
out of any funds now, or hereafter, in the treasury of this State, not he
tofore otherwise appropriated.

The appropriation hereby made shall be paid to the treasurer of t
Jamestown Exposition Company, by the treasurer of the Commonwealt
upon the warrants of the auditor of public accounts, as follows: the su
of fifty thousand dollars shall be paid to said company on or after t
first day of March, nineteen hundred and four, and within two years fre
the expiration of this present session of the general assembly : provide
that before the payment of said sum of fifty thousand dollars shall
made there shall have been paid into the treasury of said exposition cor
pany in actual cash, the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand dolla
on account of subscriptions to the capital stock of said company, and t¢
remaining portion of said appropriation, to-wit: one hundred and fifty
thousand, shall be paid on or after March first, nineteen hundred and
five, and within two years from the expiration of this present session of
the general assembly: provided, that before said sum of one hundred and
fifty thousand dollars shall be paid to said company, there shall have
been paid into the treasury of said company in actual cash the sum of
two hundred and fifty thousand dollars additional, making five hundred
thousand dollars in all, on acount of subscriptions to the capital stock of
such company. Before the auditor of public accounts shall draw or de-
liver any warrant to the said company for any money hereby appropri-
ated, there shall be filed in his office a certified copy of a resolution of
the executive committee of the Jamestown Exposition Company, and the
affidavits of the president, secretary, and treasurer, certifying that the
respective sums herein required to be paid have been duly paid as herein
prescribed: provided, further, that if from any cause the exposition is
not held or is abandoned, then so much of said appropriation as shall have
been received by said Jamestown Exposition Company shall be refunded
into the treasury of the State: and provided, further, that the acceptance
of any portion of this appropriation shall constitute a contract with said
company to return any portion of said appropriation so received, and
shall impose upon said company a liability to the State for the refunding
into the State treasury of any such moncy so received, if such exposition
is not held, or is abandoned.
