Chap. 177.—An ACT to amend and re-enact sub-section 7 of section 7 of chapter |
of an act entitled “an act to consolidate in one act all acts creating and amend
ing the charter of the city of Lynchburg, and to create a new charter for sai
city,” approved January 29, 1896, so as to provide for the acquisition and main
tenance of a new water supply for said city.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That sub-sectio!
seven of section seven of chapter six of an act entitled an act to con
solidate in one act all acts creating and amending the charter of the cit:
of Lynchburg, and to create a new charter for said city, approved Jan
uary twenty-ninth, eighteen hundred and ninety-six, be amended an
re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§ 7. To establish or enlarge water works or gas works within or with
out said city; to contract with the owners of land for the use or purchas
thereof, or to have the same condemned for the location or enlargemen
of said works, or the pipes and fixtures thereof, and to acquire by pur
chase or condemn such quantity of the water-shed lands adjacent to th
intake or source of supply, as in the judgment of the said council may b
necessary to insure a sufficient supply of water for said city, and to pro
tect the same from pollution; to prevent the throwing of filth or offen
sive matter in James river within six miles of the city limits, and t
protect said water supply, works, pipes, reservoirs, and fixtures, whethe
within or without the city, against injury and pollution, by appropriat
ordinances and penalties, to be enforced, as are the other ordinances 0:
said city.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
