Chap. 66.—An ACT for the relief of Lewis C. Williams, a native of Virginia,
authorizing the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia to grant him a cer-
tificate to practice law under certain conditions.

Whereas Lewis C. Williams, a Virginian by birth and rearing, gradu-
ated at the University of Virginia with the degree of master of arts and
studied law therein for a period of two years, and on the nineteenth day
of September, eighteen hundred and ninety-eight, removed his residence
to the state of New York, and in June, nineteen hundred, after having
studied Jaw in that city for a period of three years, as prescribed by the
laws of that state, did successfully pass the examination required by its
law and was duly admitted to practice law before its courts ; and
Whereas the said Lewis C. Williams, on the twentieth day of November.
nineteen hundred, returned to his native state (Virginia) with the intent
of there residing and with the desire of there entering upon the practice
of his profession as an attorney and counsellor at law; and it appearing
that the Supreme court of appeals of Virginia refused the said Lewis C
Williams the privilege of appearing before it on the eleventh day of
January. nineteen hundred and one, and taking the examination required
of practitioners of the law in this state for the reason that the laws thereof
require a preliminary residence for the period of six months of all non-
residents thereof, and it appearing further that the next regular examina-
tion to he held by said judyes of said court of appeals will not be held
until July. nineteen hundred and one; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the said
Supreme court of appeals of Virginia shall grant the said Lewis C. Wil-
liams a special examination, to be held as soon as convenient to its mem-
bers, and subject to such rules as they may prescribe, and in the event the
said Lewis C. Williams shall successfully stand the examination to which
he is so submitted then the said Supreme court of appeals shall grant the
said Lewis C. Williams a certificate to practice law in the courts of this
commonwealth as if he had passed the regular examination held by the
court under its rules.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
