Chap. 59.—An ACT to accept the cession by the state of Tennessee to the
state of Virginia, of a certain narrow strip of territory claimed as belonging
to the state of Tennessee, and described as lying between the northern
boundary line of the city of Bristol, in the county of Sullivan, state of ‘Ten-
nessee, and the southern boundary line of the city of Bristol, in the county
of Washington, state of Virginia, being the northern half of the Main
street of the said two cities.

Whereas the general assembly of the state of Tennessee passed an
‘t, approved on the twenty-third day of January, nineteen hundred and

boundary line of the city of Bristol, in the county of Sullivan, and the
southern boundary line of the city of Bristol, in the county of Wash-
ington, state of Virginia, being the northern half of the Main street of
the said two cities.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of the state of Ten-
essee, That all of the strip of territory lying north of the northern
oundary line of the city of Bristol, Sullivan county, state of Tennessee,
nd bounded as follows: beginning at a planted stone in the edge of a
‘ld, formerly owned by Z. L. Burson, being the northwest corner of the
d corporate territory of the old town of Bristol ; thence east with the
d northern boundary line of said town to the Bristol cemetery; thence
ue south to the centre line of Main street, the present northern boundary
ne of the city of Bristol, Tennessce; thence west with the centre line of
lain street to the northwest corner of the corporate limits of the city
f Bristol, Tennessee, being the beginning corner of said limits, as desig-
ated in the act of incorporation, chapter two hundred and fourteen, acts
f eichteen hundred and ninety-seven; thence north to the point of he-
inning; said strip of land above described being the northern half of
fain street of the two cities of Bristol, Tennessee, and Bristol, Virginia,
‘ithin the boundary designated, be, and the same is, hereby ceded to the
late of Virginia.
(a) That all vested rights of any individuals, partnerships or corpo-
ations, within the territory ceded, shall in) no wise be impaired,
estricted, or affected by this act.
(b) That this act shall not he retrospective in ifs operation, nor shall
rin any way affect the rights of any individual, partnership, or corpo-
ation in any suit now pending in any of the courts of this state, or of
he United States, wherein said cause of action arose over, or is in any
ray hased upon, the territory herein ceded.
(c) That this act shall in no wise preclude the state of Tennessee from
rosecuting any individual, partnership. or corporation for violation of
nv of the criminal laws of this state within said territory, until this act
hall go into effect, according to the provisions hereinafter set forth.
Section 2. Be it further enacted, that the secretary of state shall fur-
ish a certified copy of this act to the governor of the state of Virginia,
who, after the same shall have been acted upon by the general assembly
of the state of Virginia, is requested to furnish the governor of the state
of Tennessee a duly certified copy of the action of the general assembly
of the state of Virginia thereon; and if the same is accepted by the gen-
eral assembly of the state of Virginia, then the governor of the state of
Tennessee shall cause certified copies of this act, together with the ac-
ceptance of the same by the general assembly of the state of Virginia, to
be forwarded to the United States senators from the state of Tennessee,
and to the representative in the lower house of congress from the first
distriet of Tennessee, with a request to have the same presented to the
congress for ratification.
Section 3. Be it further enacted, that this act shall take effect as soon
as the same shall have been accepted by the general assembly of the state
of Virginia, and ratified hy the congress of the United States of America.

Whereas a certified copy of said act of the general assembly of the
state of Tennessee has been furnished to the governor of this Common-
wealth: and
Whereas a controversy has for many years existed as to whether the
boundary line between the states of Virginia and Tennessee, where the
same passes between the city of Bristol, Virginia, and the city of Bristol,
Tennessee, is along the north line of the Main strect of the said two
cities, or along the centre line of said Main street; and
Whereas althongh it is the opinion of this general assembly that the
proper line at the point in question is at least as far south as the centre
line of said Main street, yet this general assembly believes that it is right
and proper, without waiving any question as to the proper location of
the said line, to accept from the state of Tennessee the cession embraced
in said act of the general assembly of the state of Tennessee, in order that
the said state line between said two citics may be immediately and de-
finitely fixed and determined, to the end that the said question may be
put at rest, and that the said two cities may improve, care for, and
otherwise exercise jurisdiction over the said street to a point or line that
is uncontroverted; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the general
assembly of the state of Virginia accepts for and on behalf of the Com-
monwealth of Virginia the cession by the state of Tennessee to the state
of Virginia, of a strip of territory lying north of the northern boundary
line of | the city of Bristol, in the county of Sullivan, state of Tennessee,
and described in the act ceding the same as follows: Beginning at a
planted stone in the edge of a field formerly owned by Z. L. Burson,

2. That the boundary line between the state of Virginia and the stato

‘termined as being along the centre line of Main street of said cities.
3. That no vested rights of any individuals, partnerships, or corpora-
ons shall in any wise be impaired, restricted, or affected by this act.
4. That the secretary of the commonwealth shall furnish a certified
pv of this act to the governor of the state of Tennessee, and that he
all also cause certified copies of this act to be forwarded to the United
lates senators from the state of Virginia, and to the representative
om the ninth district of Virginia, in the house of representatives, with
request to have the same presented to the congress for ratification of
th the cession and the acceptance referred to herein.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
