Chap. 337.—An ACT to authorize the board of supervisors of the county of
Norfolk to create the position of sealer of weights and measures for said
county, to define the duties and fix compensation for said officer.
Approved February 16, 1901.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the board
of supervisors of the eounty of Norfolk shall have authority to appoint
a sealer of weights and measures for said county, whose duty it shall be
to annually inspect, try, and prove all scales, balances, steelvards, plat-
form balances, weights, and measures used by any person, firm or corpo-
ration, licensed for the purpose of buying or selling either or both.
2. The said sealer of weights and measures shall, in a public manner,
annually announce the time and place set for the inspection, trying, and
proving of such scales, balances, steelvards, platform balances, weights,
and measures, and seal or deface or destroy them as may be proper, for
which service the said officer shall receive such compensation as the board
of supervisors of said county may deem fit and proper: provided, how-
ever, that should any person, firm or corporation, licensed to use such
scales, balances, steelvards, platform balances, weights, and measures,
for the purpose of buving or selling either or both. fail to annually send
to the place designated by the said officer, for the inspection, trying and
proving of the weights and measures hereinbefore named, said officer
shall have the authority to go to the houses, stores, or shops of any person,
firm, or corporation licensed to use such weights and measures, and there
inspect, try, and prove such weights and measures, used by such person,
firm or corporation. and seal or deface or destroy them as may be proper,
for which service he shall reecive double the amount of the regular fee
fixed by the board of supervisors of said county. This act shall apply
with equal foree to all hav scales, platform balances, and any and all
scales of whatsoever kind and description kept for the public use.
3. The term of oflice of the said sealer of weights and measures shall
he fixed by the board of supervisors of the county of Norfolk, who shall
also provide rules governing said officer, and who shall make an annual
report to such officer or officers as may be designated by the said board of
supervisors.
