Chap. 232.—An ACT to ratify and confirm the charter of the “Peoples Tele-
phone company,” and to give it additional powers.
Approved February 15, 1901.
Whereas the Honorable B. A. Hancock, judge of the circuit court of
Surry county, in vacation, did, on April fifteenth, eighteen hundred and
ninety-nine, grant a charter of incorporation to the “Peoples telephone
company,” which was duly lodged and recorded in the office of the secre-
tary of the commonwealth, and which is in the following words and
figures—to-wit :
To the Honorable B. A. Hancock, judge of the circuit court of Surry
county: :
In vacation.
Know all men by these presents, that we, C. W. Warren, W. J. Bell,
W. D. Turner, W. P. Wilson, G. A. Savedge, A. S. Edwards, W. L. Ward
and A. P. Bohannan, desiring to form a joint stock company under the
provisions of section one thousand one hundred and forty-five of the
code of Virginia, and the acts of the general assembly amendatory
thereof, do hereby make, sign and acknowledge the following certificate
in writing—namely :
First. The name of the said company shall be “Peoples telephone
company.”
Second. The purposes for which said company is founded are to
construct, maintain, and operate a telephone line from Surry court-house,
Surry county, Virginia, to Smithfield, Isle of Wight county, Virginia,
and to construct, maintain and operate branch lines therefrom to divers
points in the said counties of Surry and Isle of Wight; to charge and
receive reasonable tolls, fees, and so forth, for the transmission of mes-
sages over its said line; to connect with other short and long-distance
telephone lines, and generally to do any and all things lawful, pertaining
to the business of constructing, maintaining and operating a telephone
line.
Third. The minimum amount of capital stock of said company shall
be two thousand dollars ($2,000), and the maximum of capital stock
shall be five thousand dollars ($5,000), and the same is to be divided into
shares of twenty-five dollars ($25) each.
Fourth. The said company proposes to hold real estate not to exceed
at any one time ten acres.
Fifth. The principal office of said company is to be kept at Bacon’s
castle, Surry county, Virginia.
Sixth. The chief business to be transacted by said company is the
maintenance and operation of a general electric iclephone line for the
transmission of messages, renting of telephones, and so forth, for com-
pensation.
Seventh. The names and residences of the officers, who for the first
year are to manage and conduct the affairs of the said company, are as
follows:
President, C. W. Warren, of Bacon’s castle, Virginia; vice-president,
G. A. Savedge, of Alliance, Virginia; secretary and treasurer, W. J. Bell,

the state of Virginia, do certify that W. D. Turner, W. P. Wilson, George
A. Savedge, W. LL. Ward, W. J. Bell, and C. W. Warren, whose names are
signed to the writing above, bearing date on the twenty-seventh day of
March, eighteen hundred and ninety-nine, have acknowledged the same
before me in my said county.

I, W. B. Clarke, a commissioner in chancery for the circuit court of
the county aforesaid, in the state of Virginia, do certify that A. 8.
Edwards and A. P. Bohannan, whose names are signed to the writing

dred and ninety-nine, have acknowledged the same before me in my
county aforesaid.

T hereby certify that T have received from C. W. Warren the sum of
fifteen dollars, being the state fee required by law on the within-named
charter of incorporation, in event the same shall be granted.

In the circuit court of Surry county, in vacation, March, eignieen hun-
dred and ninety-nine:
It appearing to the judge of this court. in vacation, that C. W. War-
ren, W. J. Bell, G. A. Savedge, W: D. Turner, W. P. Wilson, A. S.
Edwards, W. Tu. Ward and A. P. Bohannan, desire to form a joint stock
company, and that the said parties have duly made, signed, and acknow-
ledged the foregoing certificate in writing according to law, and it further
appearing, upon due consideration thereof, that all the requirements of
law have been fully complied with, it is ordered that a charter of incor-
poration be, and the same is, hereby granted to the aforesaid parties
named in said certificate, and their successors and associates, under the
name of “Peoples telephone company,” upon the terms set forth in said
certificate, which certificate is made a part of this order as fully to all
intents and purposes as if it were here again recited. But this charter
is granted upon the express condition that said company shall pay all
taxes, dues, and demands due the commonwealth of Virginia, or such as
may be hereafter assessed against it, in lawful money of the United States
and not in coupons.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the said
charter of the said “Peoples telephone company” be, and the same is,
hereby ratified and confirmed.
2. The said company is hereby expressly authorized and empowered
to have, acquire, and enjoy all the rights and privileges of a corporation
under the general laws of Virginia, including all such rights as by said
laws are given to telephone and telegraph companies, and any works of
internal improvement, and subject to all the regulations and restrictions
imposed by the laws of the state in relation to corporations.
3. Said company shall have power to acquire, by purchase, lease or
condemnation, in accordance with the laws of the state of Virginia, all
real estate, easements, or franchises necessary for the convenient erec-
tion and maintenance of its lines, poles, conduits and telephone appli-
ances, offices and exchanges, and for the general conduct of its business.
4. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this act are hereby re-
pealed.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
