Chap. 224.—An ACT to incorporate the Bethel military academy, Fauquier
county, Virginia.
Approved February 15, 1901.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That R. A.
McIntyre, 'T. W. Smith, KE. 8. Blackwell, Henry D. Blackwell, Henry I.
Smith, M. J. Jenkins, and such persons as may hereafter be associated
with them, be, and are, hereby incorporated under the name of Bethel
military academy, for the purpose of conducting an educational institu-
tion in the county of Fauquier, with the power to discipline and prepare
students for the universities and the government academies, and to
graduate such as may have successfully completed the required courses
under the regulations of the said Bethel military academy.
2. The said academy shall have all powers incident to corporations,
and is hereby authorized to do all acts conducive to the success of the
institution and necessary to carry out the corporate purpose.
3. The capital stock shall not be less than twenty thousand ($20,000)
dollars nor more than fifty thousand ($50,000) dollars, free from taxa-
tion, so long as said corporate property is used for educational purposes.
4. The said academy is to receive every session, free of tuition, one
boarding student from each congressional district in Virginia, the said
student to be nominated by the representative in congress from his dis-
trict; also, one boarding student from each of the school districts in
Fauquier county, to be nominated by the county superintendent, upon
the recommendation of the trustees from his school district. The faculty
of the said academy is to render the public school teachers of Fauquier
county such incidental aid as they may need, from time to time, to advise
with them for the best interests of the public schools of the county, and
they may hold summer lectures, normal and otherwise, for the promotion
of popular interest in education.
5. The said Bethel military academy may, in the discretion of the
board of directors, be embodied in the militia of the commonwealth, so
that the corps of cadets may be and become a part of the organized and
equipped military force of Virginia, subject to all the rules, regulations
and laws pertaining to the same: provided, that nothing in this act shall
be construed to repeal an act entitled an act “to commission officers of
cadets of Bethel military academy, Fauquier county, Virginia,” except
so far as said act may be in conflict with the military laws of Virginia.
if the board of directors do exercise their powers under this act.
6. The corporators perficientes in this charter shall constitute the first
board of directors, and they, or any one of them, shall have the power to
call a meeting immediately upon the passage of this act, to elect perma-
nent officers for the said Bethel military academy, and to take all other
necessary steps toward permanent organization.
