Chap. 149.—An ACT giving the consent of this state to the acquisition by
the government of the United States of so much land as may be necessary
for a public building in the city of Charlottesville.
Approved February 14, 1901.
Whereas there is pending in the congress of the United States a bill
providing for the erection of a public building in the city of Charlottes-
ville: and
Whereas no such building will be erected, and no part of the money
provided to be appropriated therefor, will be expended until a valid
title to the said site shall be vested in the United States, nor until
Virginia shall cede to the United States exclusive jurisdiction over the
same during the time the United States shall be or remain the owner
thereof, for all purposes except administration of the criminal laws of
Virginia and the service of civil process therein; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the con-
sent of the state of Virginia is hereby given and “granted to the pur-
chase or acquisition by the government of the United States, or under
the authority of the same, of so much land as may be requisite and con-
venient for a site for a public building for the use and accommodation
of the United States courts, of the post-ollice and internal revenue office,
and for other government uses at the city of Charlottesville and state of
Virginia.
That this state cedes to the United States exclusive jurisdiction
over the site so purchased or acquired, and over the building or build-
ings which may be erected thereon, during the time the United States
shall be or remain the owner thereof, for all purposes except the adminis-
tration of the criminal laws of said state and the service of civil process
therein.
3. The lots, parcels or tracts of land so acquired, together with the
buildings and appurtenances for the purpose or purposes before men-
tioned, shall be held exempt from all state, county and municipal taxa-
tion so long as the United States shall be and remain the owner thereof.
This act shall be in force from its passage.
