Chap. 234.—An ACT to incorporate the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority of the State
Female Normal School, of Farmville, Virginia.
Approved March 15, 1902.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That Grace
Klean, Frances Yancy Smith, Susie Ware Warner, Pearl Garrett Hund-
ley, and Mary Oliva Frayser, and such other persons as are now or ma.
hereafter be associated with them, are hereby declared to be a body politi
and corporate by the name, style, and title of the Zeta Tau Alph:
Sorority, and by that name shall be known in law, and shall have per
petual succession and a common seal, which may be a scroll or impres
sion, with the right to change the same at pleasure, and shall have powe
to sue and be sued, contract and be contracted with, and have all th
rights and privileges of a corporation, and be subject to all the rules, reg
ulations, and restrictions, and do all acts, and enjoy all other powers inci
dent to similar corporations in gencral under and subject to the laws o
the Commonwealth.
2. The object of said association shall be to intensify friendship, t
promote happiness among its members, and in every way to create suc!
sentiments, to perform such deeds, and to mould such opinions as wil
conduce to the building up of a nobler and purer womanhood in th
world.
3. That the members of said corporation who are or may be entitle
to vote at any election of officers shall have full authority and power t
make and adopt a constitution and by-laws, and to determine who shal
be eligible to become members thereof, and to prescribe rules and regu
lations for the government of said association and the promotion of it
interests, for the admission and expulsion of members, and, from time t
time, to alter and amend the same: provided, that the same be not incon
sistent with the constitution and laws of the United States and of th
State of Virginia.
4. That the officers of said association shall consist of a president an
such others as may be deemed necessary, and they shall be elected in suc!
manner and at such times as the constitution or by-laws may prescribe.
5. That said association being for benevolent purposes, there shall b
no capital stock, and no charter tax shall be required of it; that said asso
ciation may take and acquire by purchase, gift, devise, bequest, or other
wise, and hold real and personal estate, and lease, sell, encumber, or other
wise dispose of the same in such manner as may seem most advantageou:
to the association or duly authorized committee thereof: provided, tha
it shall not at any one time hold real estate of greater value than ten thou
sand dollars.
6. The principal office and place of business of said association shal
be at Farmville, Virginia, with authority to establish subordinate asso
ciations at any other female colleges and schools in this State.
