Chap. 779.—An ACT to give the consent of the commonwealth to the purchase
or acquisition of real estate by the United States government, in the city of
Portsmouth, for a site of a public building for the accommodation of the
United States post-office, internal revenue, and other offices.
Approved March 6, 1900.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
consent of the state of Virginia is hereby given and granted to the pur-
chase or acquisition by the government of the United States, or under
the authority of the same, of so much land as may by said government
be deemed expedient for a site for a public building for the accommoda-
tion of the United States post-office, internal revenue, and other govern-
ment offices, in the city of Portsmouth, and state of Virginia.
2. That this state hereby cedes to the United States of America ex-
clusive jurisdiction over such land during the time the United States
shall be or remain the owner thereof for all purposes, except the admin-
istration of the criminal laws of this state and the service of civil process
therein.
3. The land so acquired, together with the tenements and appurte-
nances for the purposes before mentioned, shall be held exempt from
all state and municipal taxation so long as the United States shall be
and remain the owners thereof.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
