Chap. 666.—An ACT to incorporate the Christiansburg industria} institute
| of Cambria, Virginia.
Approved February 27, 1900.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That Ellisom
P. Morris, Richard S. Deevess, William H. Futrell, Morris E. Leeds,
and William 8. Vaux, junior, trustees, and such other persons as may be
associated with them; and their successors, are hereby created and
declared to be a body. politic and corporate, by the name and style of
Christiansburg industrial institute, and by such name shall have per-
petual succession, and may contract and be contracted with, sue and be
sued, make and use a common seal, and alter the same at pleasure,
and make such by-laws, rules, and regulations for the government of
said corporation and the conduct of its business as may be deemed nec-
essary, not in conflict with the constitution of the state of Virginia
and of United States.
2. The purposes of this corporation are to educate and train the col-
ored race, and for this purpose may take, own, hold, possess, and
enjoy such real and personal estate as may by purchase, gift, grant,
devise, lease, or otherwise become vested in it, and may sell or other-
wise dispose of same, and may exercise all other powers, privileges, and
immunities necessary and proper to accomplish the purpose and objects
herein set forth.
3. This corporation being purely benevolent shall have no capital
stock, and the amount of real estate held by it shall be limited to the
amount found to he sufficient and necessary for carrying out the objects
aforesaid, not to exceed one thousand acres.
4. The chief business of this corporation shall be transacted in the
state of Virginia, with its principal office in the town of Cambria, and
county of Montgomery, which business shall consist in the instruction
and training of the colored race in the English branches and industrial
an'*.
. The voting membership of this corporation shall consist of such
persona as are memhers of the friends’ freedmen’s association of Phila-
delphia, Pennsvlvania, or their successors. The said voting members
shall hold an annual mecting on such date and at such place as may be
provided for in the by-laws of said corporation, at which time the said
voting membership shall elect twelve trustees to serve for a term of one
year or until their successors are elected. of whom at least three shall be
residents of the state of Virginia, who shall have the care and mana:sre-
ment of said corporation. The said trustees shall elect from their own
members a president, treasurer, and secretarv to serve for a term of one
year, and shall perform such other duties as mav be required of them
under the by-laws of said corporation. .The said board of trustees shal}
meet at such time and place as the by-laws may prescribe, and shal] have
power to elect a trustee or trustees to fill any vacancy occurring in their
number for the unexpired term.
6. All the rights, nowers, privileres, exemptions, and immunities
secured by the laws of Virginia to like institutions and academies are
lso hereby granted to the Christiansburg industrial institute hereby
ncorporated. It shall be free from all taxation, and subject in all
espects to the laws of Virginia in such cases made and provided.
