Chap. 665.—An ACT for the relief of the congregation and members of
Madison station Methodist Episcopal church south, in Amherst county,
authorizing the establishment of Meade memorial burial ground and defin-
ing the duties and powers of the trustees thereof.
Approved February 27, 1900.
Whereas Mead’s chapel Methodist Episcopal church, south, in
Amherst county, has long since gone into disuse and has long since
been abandoned as a place of public worship, and the church building
has decayed and fallen down, and the congregation which formerly
worshipped at said Mead’s chapel have removed to Madison station
Methodist Episcopal church, south, a new church in the town of Madi-
son, Amherst county; and
Whereas the grounds of the said Mead’s chapel Methodist Episcopal
church, south, has, for a number of years, been used as a burying ground
for the congregation and members of said Madison station Methodist
Kpiscopal church, south; and
Whereas it is the desire of said congregation and members of said
Madison station Methodist Episcopal church, south, to improve and
beautify said burying ground, and acquire more land for the purpose
of enlarging said burying ground; and
Whereas Stith Mead, Daniel Day, George Markham, Jessie Beck, and
James Lee, the original trustees of said Mead’s chapel Methodist Epis-
copal church, south, have long since died and no successors have been
elected in accordance with the provisions of the deed to the aforesaid
trustees, but Thomas Whitehead, junior, F. B. Tyler, H. C. Dawson,
and John D. Mays have heretofore heen elected trustees of Mead’s chapel
Methodist Episcopal church, south, in accordance with the rules and
discipline of the Methodist Episcopal church, south, and do now hold
the said property in trust for the use and benefit of the members and
congregation of Madison station Methodist Episcopal church, south;
therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That Thomas
Whitehead, junior, F. B. Tyler, H. C. Dawson, John D. Mays, M. F.
Kulp, A. J. Brvant, and J. P. Mays, trustees as aforesaid, and their
successors in office, forever be, and they are herebv, empowered to hold
the grounds of said Mead’s chapel in trust, for the use and benefit of
Madison station Methodist Episcopal church, south, as a burial ground.
2. Said trustees shall have power to make all needful rules and regu-
lations for the election of officers and trustees, to fill vacancies caused
by death or resignation, and for the burial of the dead, the laying off,
assionment, and sale of burial lots, and the management, care, preser-
vation, and improvement of the grounds, as they mav deem proper;
thev may take and hold personal propertv and money for the purposes
of the trust and what is so acquired, and all money received from the
sale of lots shall be accounted for by them annuallv at the fourth
quarterly conference of the Madison station Methodist Episcopal church,
South.
3. Said burving ground shall hereafter be known as the “ Mead
memorial burial ground.”
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
