Chap. 331.—An ACT to authorize the board of supervisors of Elizabeth (
county to borrow money by the issue of bonds, to pay off indebtedn
incurred on account of expenditures for small-pox, and improvements
public roads of said county.
Approved February 14, 1900.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the bo
of supervisors of Elizabeth City county, be, and they are hereby, auth
ized and empowered to issue bonds in the name, and on behalf of Eh
beth City county, for a sum not exceeding twelve thousand doll:
and to sell the said bonds under such conditions as are hereinafter f
scribed, but for not less than par, and with the proceeds of such sale »
off the indebtedness of the county, incurred by reason of small-p
and improvements to the public roads of said county.
2. That the bonds issued in pursuance of this act, shall be coupon
registered bonds of not less in denomination than one hundred doll:
nor more than five hundred dollars each, payable in not less than |
nor more than fifty years from their date, and bearing interest paya
semi-annually at, and after a rate not exceeding six per centum per
num, the said bonds to be issued at such time or times as said board.

»f said board. The said bonds shall be issued in the name of Elizab
‘ity county, shall be signed by the chairman of the board of sur

‘county, and then shall be affixed thereto the seal of the said board
upervisors; the interest accruing on said bonds and the bonds at ma
‘ity to be payable in lawful moncy of the United States.
3. The bonds issued in pursuance of this act to be in such form
orms as the said board of supervisors and the attorney for the comm
vealth of said county may adopt.
4. The board of supervisors of said county, and their successors
ffice, are hereby empowered and directed to levy a tax upon such s
ects of taxation as are now or may hereafter be liable by law for °
ounty levy, a sufficient tax to meet the annual interest on said bon
nd one year prior to their maturity, levy an additional tax suffici
o retire and cancel as many of said bonds as will become due and p
ble in the succeeding year. ‘The faith and property of Elizabeth C
ounty are hereby pledged to the prompt and faithful payment of |
rincipal and the interest of said bonds.
5. That all moneys received from the sale of said bonds shall be
cived by the treasurer of Elizabeth City countv and accounted for
im. He shall be liable on his official bond for the proper custody a
isbursement of the same, and shall be entitled to receive for his s
ices @ commission of one per centum upon the amount of the proce
f the sale of said bonds.
6. That the bonds and coupons issued under this act shall be redeer
le at the office of the treasurer of Elizabeth City county.
