Chap. 180.—An ACT to authorize and empower the governor of Virginia to
issue another grant to Winfield Liggett on land office treasury warrant
number 30,496, in lieu of the grant rescinded by this act.
In effect January 25, 1900.
Whereas Winfield Liggett, S. M. Yost, and J. Q. Winfield, in con-
formity with a survey made on the twenty-first day of May, eighteen hun-
dred and eighty-three, by virtue of land office treasury warrant number
thirty thousand four hundred and ninety-six, were granted by William
E. Cameron, esquire, governor of the commonwealth of Virginia, by
grant bearing date the twenty-fourth day of September, eighteen hun-
dred and eighty-three, certain lands lying in Brock’s Gap, Rocking-
ham county, Virginia, in said grant described, averegating three thou-
sand four hundred and thirty acres, upon the supposition that said lands
were lands that belonged to the commonwealth of Virginia, and open to
entry; and
Whereas it has been shown that said lands were not open to entry, and
that the grantees in said grant never reccived any benefit or use thereof
whatever, and that the same had been previously granted by the com-
monwealth of Virginia, and are still held and owned by parties claiming
under the oricinal grant: and
Whereas Winfield Liggett is now the sole beneficiary and assignee of
the rights of all the said parties in said grant; and
Whereas he gave his check, on the twenty-fifth day of May, eighteen
hundred and eighty-three, for the sum of three hundred and forty-three
dollars and forty-three cents, payable to the state treasurer, for said land,
drawn on the first national bank of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and which
said check was duly paid to said state treasurer, ‘and he now desires to
relocate said treasury warrant number thirty thousand four hundred
and ninety-six, upon any vacant lands of the commonwealth: therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the afore-
said grant from William E. Cameron, governor, issued under the afore-
said warrant. be, and is hereby, rescinded and declared null and void:
that the said Winfield Liggett be, and is hereby, permitted to locate said
treasury warrant number thirty thousand four hundred and ninety-six,
upon any vacant lands of the commonwealth of Virginia, to the extent to
which he is entitled to locate the same. to the value of said check,
namely: three hundred and forty-three dollars and forty-three cents, and
upon his locating the same upon such vacant lands to such extent, the
governor of Virginia is hereby authorized and empowered to issue a
grant to the said Winfield Liggett, or his assigns, for the lands so
located by him, in pursuance of the authority herein granted by this
act.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
