Chap. 1387.—JOINT RESOLUTION setting apart the birthday of Jefferson Davis
as a day of recreation in the public schools, etc.
Approved March 7, 1900.
Whereas Jefferson Davis, president of the late Confederate states
of America, was born on the third day of June, eighteen hundred and
eight, and in order to commemorate his distinguished services as a
patriot, Christian, and champion of constitutional liberty, and at the
earnest request of Richmond chapter, Richmond, the seventeenth Vir-
ginia regiment chapter, Alexandria, and other chapters of the united
daughters of the Confederacy in the state; therefore,
Be it resolved by the general assembly of Virginia, as a mark of per-
petual respect and remembrance of the said Jefferson Davis, and of the
distinguished services rendered by him, That the third day of June in
each year be, and the same is hereby, set apart as a day of recreation
in the public schools of the commonwealth, and that the public offices
of the state be closed after twelve o’clock meridian of each recurrence
of said day, and that the flag of the state be hoisted over the capitol
building.
