Chap. 1044.—An ACT fixing the rates of toll upon the Warm Springs and
Harrisonburg turnpike, and repealing all existing laws in conflict with this
act, so far as it affects said turnpike.
Approved March 7, 1900.
1. Be it enacted bv the general assembly of Virginia, That the
following tolls may he received on said turnpike on a section of five miles
which has been completed, except as hereinafter modified—namely: Six
and a quarter cents upon twenty sheep or hogs, and ten cents for twenty
cattle; three cents for a horse, mare, mule, or gelding; five cents for a
one-horse driving carriage, buggy, or cart, and the animal drawing the
same; for a two-horse driving carriage or buggy and the animals drawing
the same, eight cents; for a wagon or cart drawn by one horse and the
animal drawing the same, five cents; for a two-horse wagon and the
animals drawing the same, eight cents; and for a four-horse wagon and
the animals drawing the same, twelve cents; and for each additional
horse, three cents; and for a traction engine, six and a quarter cents for
each wheel running on the ground; for the threshing machine or loaded
wagon drawn by said engine, three and one quarter cents, and for any
distance traveled less than a section of five miles the rate of toll shall
be in proportion to the above amount charged for the whole. Persons
going to Bridgewater and returning from any point not further south
than the toll-gate at Bridgewater shall only be charged one-half of the
toll hereinbefore fixed.
2. Be it further enacted, That any citizen of the county of Augusta
or the county of Rockingham shall be entitled, upon application and
payment in advance, to travel over any section, or portion of a section
of said turnpike, for horseback riding or for driving and pleasure car-
riaves at an annual toll not to exceed three-fifths of the annual rate now
charged by such turnpike for such riding or driving.
3. Be it further enacted, That all acts either of a general or special
nature in conflict with this act so far as they may affect the Warm
Spring and Harrisonburg turnpike are hereby repealed.
4. This act shall be in force from and after March fifteenth, nineteen
hundred.
