Chap. 465.—An ACT to enipower the board of supervisors of the county of Frank-
lin to provide for repairing and keeping in order the roads and bridges in that
county.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the super-
visors of the county of F) ranklin, be, and they hereby are, empowered
to levy a tax upon the real and personal property in the county of
Franklin, not to exceed thirty cents on the hundred dollars’ worth of
property, to be expended upon working and keeping in order the public
roads, and maintaining the bridges in the county of Franklin.
The said board of supervisors shall have full power and authority to
make contracts for working the aforesaid roads, and keeping up the
suid bridges, by contract or otherwise, these contracts to have such
conditions and saving clauses as may be determined upon by the said
board.
They shall have authority to employ the money raised by the tax
which they may impose, in such manner as will enable them, in their
Judgment, to eet the best return for their expenditure, and to put and
maintain the roads and bridges in the county in the best possible condition.
They shall have the authority to employ all necessary agents in connection
with whatever system they mav adopt with reference to working and
maintaining the said roads and keeping up the said bridges; the duties and
compensation of these employees to be fixed by the said board. ‘They
shall have authority to lay off and designate the roads in cach magisterial
district of the county, in precincts, these precincts to be known as precinct
No. in ——— district. They shall have the authority to make the
necessary provisions whereby parties assessed with road taxes, and de-
sirous of working out the same, may do so.
The board of supervisors may adopt for the county of Franklin any
laws or parts of laws in force in any county of this state for repairing
and keeping in order the public roads and bridges. Such acts or parts
of acts, when adopted by the board for the county of Franklin, shall
be entered upon the minutes of the board. The tax provided for by
this act shall be levied and collected as any other tax, but shall be
known as the road tax upon the tax tickets. The treasurer of the
county shall keep a separate account of this fund, which shall be dis-
bursed upon the warrants of the board of supervisors. All acts or
parts of acts in conflict with this act are hereby to that extent repealed.
2. This act shall be in force from its passaze.
