Chap. 214.—An ACT for the relief of Emory and Henry College.
Approved February 7, 1898.
Whereas Emory and Henry college having bonded its indebte
October first, eighteen hundred and ninety-five, in the sum of thir
thousand dollars, finds itself unable to maintain its work and at the
time meet the annually accruing interest on its bonds; and
Whereas by authority and direction of an act approved Fek
seventeenth, eighteen hundred and ninety-six, the board of public
has accepted of seven thousand dollars of said bonds as satisfactio
i. balance due on the purchase price of two hundred and forty-eigh
a half acres of land sold to the college by the state, April first, eig
1undred and ninety-one, at a valuation of nine thousand nine hundred
ind forty dollars; and
Whereas said valuation was made under the prevailing excitement con-
ferming towns and town building; and
Whereas the college has paid to the state on said purchase four thou-
cand two hundred and sixty-two elollars and twelve cents, which, it 1s
peheved, is an amount equal to and possibly greater than can now be
realized for the college by the sale of said lands; and
Whereas to force the collection of these bonds would seriously injure
one of the most valuable institutions in the state, and at the same time
secure but a small part of their face value: therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That upon the
payment of two thousand dollars (additional) the board of public works
is hereby authorized and directed to deliver back to Emory and Henry
colleve the bonds now held against it in consequence of said purchase:
provided said amount be paid to the state on or before November first,
elyhteen hundred and ninety-eight.
