Chap. 737.—An ACT requiring the use of bells and steam whistles on locomo-
tive engines before reaching highway crossings, to protect human life.

. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That a
land asteam whistle shall be placed on each locomotive engine
rated on any railway in this state, and said whistle shall be at
least twice sharply sounded, not less than three hundred yare
before a highway crossing is reached: provided that at street cros
ings within the limits of incorporated cities or towns the soundir
of the whistle may be omitted, unless required by the council of an
such city or town, and the company shall also be liable for a
damages which shall be sustained by any person by reason of suc
neglect.
2. Every officer or employee of any railway company who sha
violate any of the provisions of this act shall be punished by fin
not exceeding fifty dollars for each offence.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
